A magnitude-7.7 earthquake that struck eastern Indonesia on Saturday has killed at least 51 people, with rescue operations ongoing.

Here are the deadliest earthquakes of the past decade, as recorded by Indonesia’s disaster mitigation agency BNPB:

    Palu, Sigi — 4,141 deaths

September 28, 2018: Magnitude-7.5 earthquake triggered a tsunami and widespread liquefaction, devastating Palu city and surrounding districts in Donggala regency on the island of Sulawesi. The quake killed 4,141, injured 4,438 and left 705 people missing, with more than 110,000 homes damaged or destroyed.

    Cianjur — 602

November 21, 2022: Shallow inland magnitude-5.6 earthquake killed 602 people in West Java province, despite its relatively moderate magnitude, in Indonesia’s deadliest non-tsunami earthquake of the past decade. The quake injured 7,810 and damaged more than 56,000 homes.

    Lombok — 518

August 5, 2018: Magnitude-7.0 quake and a series of powerful aftershocks devastated large parts of Lombok in West Nusa Tenggara province, killing at least 518.

    Mamuju-Majene — 107

January 15, 2021: Magnitude-6.2 earthquake caused widespread building collapses, including government offices, homes and health facilities in West Sulawesi province. It killed 107 people, with extensive damage across Mamuju and Majene regencies.

    Pidie Jaya — 96

December 7, 2016: Shallow magnitude-6.5 earthquake struck before dawn, toppling buildings and trapping residents under the rubble. Records show 96 deaths and hundreds injured in one of Aceh province’s deadliest disasters since the massive 2004 tsunami.
