KARACHI: A teenager and a suspected robber were shot dead on Wednesday night as robbers and a resident engaged in gunfire in Karachi’s Orangi Town area.
The victim, identified as Hussain, was 14 years old. He was killed during an attempted street robbery in Orangi Town, within the jurisdiction of Pakistan Bazaar police station.
Police said that two motorbike riders were trying to rob a bystander when Shahenshah Hasan, a local resident, used his licensed firearm to shoot the robbers.
Consequently, one of the suspects died then and there, and the other fled the scene in wounded condition. Unfortunately, the teenager, who was the son of a man named Ali, was shot and killed by the suspects during the gunfight.
Police have recovered a weapon along with ammunition from the killed suspect. The citizen’s licensed pistol has also been seized for forensic analysis. Efforts are underway to identify the suspect and further investigations are underway.
As per family members, the fire exchange occurred near a mosque in the Gulshan-e-Bihar locality.
Speaking to the media, the victim’s maternal uncle stated that robbers attempted to snatch Hussain’s mobile phone. When Hussain tried to apprehend the fleeing robber, the assailant dragged him and then opened fire, discharging nine bullets.
The family rushed Hussain to a private hospital near KDA Chowrangi. However, his relatives reported that he had already succumbed to his injuries on the way to the medical facility.
The deceased was the third among his four siblings. The uncle said his nephew was a Hafiz-e-Quran (one who has memorised the Quran) and was also pursuing religious studies to become an aalim (religious scholar).
The grieving family appealed to the government for justice. “We appeal to the government to provide us with justice,” the victim’s uncle pleaded. Hussain’s brother also voiced his anguish, demanding justice for the killing of his younger sibling.
The incident has left the family and residents of the area in deep shock and mourning. Police have yet to release details of their investigation into the robbery and the fatal shooting.
Separately, a man injured while resisting a mugging bid on Tuesday succumbed to his injuries later during treatment at hospital, The News reported.
A 50-year-old man, identified as Irfan, who was wounded during a robbery near Noor-ul-Islam Masjid in the Korangi area succumbed to his injuries on Wednesday.
The incident occurred when motorcycle-riding robbers opened fire on Irfan during a mugging attempt as he resisted. The injured victim was taken to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre for emergency medical care but he passed away during treatment the next day.
According to Zaman Town SHO Ghulam Nabi Afridi, the incident originally led to a case being registered under attempted murder charges. However, with Irfan’s death, the charges will now be upgraded to include murder. Police further confirmed that the search for the suspects were underway using technical methods.
With these killings, the number of people killed in 2025 due to robbers’ firing in Karachi has risen to 33.
