Media tycoon reshaped television broadcasting and expanded into major networks such as TNT and Cartoon Network.

Ted Turner, the American media pioneer and founder of CNN has died at the age of 87. According to a statement from Turner Enterprises he passed away peacefully on Wednesday surrounded by his family.

Turner was widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in modern media credited with fundamentally transforming television news and introducing the concept of 24-hour global news coverage.

In 1980 Turner launched CNN as the world’s first 24-hour television news channel. At the time the idea was widely dismissed by critics but it ultimately redefined international journalism and set a new standard for continuous news reporting.

CNN’s global influence became especially significant during major world events, including the Gulf War when its real-time coverage marked a major shift in how conflicts and breaking news were broadcast to international audiences.

Beyond CNN Turner built a large media and entertainment empire that included channels such as TNT, Cartoon Network, and Turner Classic Movies.

He also expanded into sports ownership including the Atlanta Braves and Atlanta Hawks using sports broadcasting as a key driver of audience growth.

In 1996 Turner sold his media holdings to Time Warner in a deal valued at approximately $7.5 billion. Despite the sale, CNN remained closely associated with his legacy as his most defining achievement.

Outside of media Turner was actively involved in philanthropy and environmental initiatives. He founded the United Nations Foundation and contributed significantly to global humanitarian and development efforts.

He also supported conservation projects across North America, including wildlife restoration programs focused on bison populations. His work in media also extended to environmental awareness through the animated series Captain Planet.

Turner was diagnosed with Lewy body dementia in 2018. He also suffered from pneumonia in 2025 but briefly recovered before his health declined in later years.

He is survived by five children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Ted Turner leaves behind a lasting legacy as the architect of 24-hour news television. His vision reshaped global journalism, influencing how news is produced, distributed, and consumed worldwide.
