Swifties declared the National Poet’s Day into an unofficial Taylor Swift holiday.

On Friday, August 21, the 14-time Grammy winning songstress’ fans turn National Poet’s Day into a The Tortured Poets Department celebration

The connection was almost too perfect to resist. Swift’s 2024 album is steeped in imagery of poetry, writers, typewriters and tortured artists, making the annual celebration of verse feel tailor-made for the Swifties universe.

Across social media, fans quickly turned the coincidence into their own celebration of the record, joking that the holiday explains why they have suddenly been feeling an overwhelming urge to revisit TTPD.

“Oh THIS is why I’ve been getting strong Tortured Poets urges since the morning,” one fan joked.

Another declared, “TTPD so good they created a day for it,” while others simply proclaimed, “It’s her day” and called Swift “the greatest poet of our generation.”

The jokes have even produced a new nickname for the singer: “Taylliam Swiftspeare.”

Of course, not everyone is ready to hand Swift the literary crown.

Some social media users were quick to point out that when National Poet’s Day rolls around, the conversation should perhaps begin with the poets who actually shaped literary history, with names such as Anne Brontë getting their own moment in the spotlight.

And that debate is arguably what makes the Swiftie takeover so entertaining.

National Poet’s Day was established in the UK in 1994 by poet and entrepreneur William Sieghart as a celebration intended to encourage people to read and write poetry.

Decades later, the day is being marked in a modern way through a pop superstar’s songwriting and an album whose entire aesthetic revolves around the idea of the tortured writer.

Swifties may not have officially renamed August 21 Tortured Poets Day, but judging by the internet, the typewriters are already out.
