Stomach cancer, also known as gastric cancer, is a disease in which abnormal cells grow uncontrollably in the lining of the stomach. It is one of the more serious types of cancer because it often develops slowly and may not show clear symptoms in its early stages.

As the disease progresses, it can affect digestion and overall health. Early detection and timely treatment are important for improving the chances of recovery.

    Common Symptoms

The symptoms of stomach cancer can be mild at first and may be mistaken for common digestive problems. People may experience persistent stomach pain, indigestion, heartburn, or a feeling of fullness even after eating a small amount of food. Other symptoms may include nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, and unexplained weight loss. Some individuals may also notice fatigue, weakness, or difficulty swallowing. In more advanced cases, there may be vomiting of blood or blood in the stool.

    Causes and Risk Factors

The exact cause of stomach cancer is not always known, but several factors can increase the risk. Infection with the bacteria Helicobacter pylori is one of the most common risk factors. A diet high in salty, smoked, or processed foods may also raise the risk. Smoking, heavy alcohol use, and a family history of stomach cancer can further increase the chances of developing the disease. In addition, long-term stomach inflammation and certain genetic conditions may also contribute to its development.

    Diagnosis and Treatment

Doctors usually diagnose stomach cancer through medical tests such as endoscopy, biopsy, and imaging scans. During an endoscopy, a thin flexible tube with a camera is inserted through the mouth to examine the stomach lining. If abnormal tissue is found, a small sample may be taken for further testing.

Treatment for stomach cancer depends on the stage of the disease and the patient’s overall health. Surgery is often the main treatment and may involve removing part or all of the stomach. Other treatments may include chemotherapy, radiation therapy, or targeted drug therapy to destroy cancer cells and prevent them from spreading.

    Prevention and Awareness

Although stomach cancer cannot always be prevented, certain lifestyle choices may help reduce the risk. Eating a balanced diet rich in fruits and vegetables, avoiding excessive salt and processed foods, quitting smoking, and limiting alcohol intake can support better stomach health. Regular medical checkups and early consultation with a doctor when symptoms appear can also help detect the disease at an earlier stage.
