Speaking in the Sindh Assembly, Memon said the provincial government had introduced several initiatives aimed at empowering women, adding that the EV Pink Taxi Scheme would be launched following the successful rollout of the Pink Scooter programme.
He said traffic police have been told to take action if men are found using pink scooters given under the scheme. “We have received complaints that some women’s brothers are using the scooters, and necessary instructions have been issued to address the matter,” he said.
The minister added that the upcoming EV Pink Taxi Scheme will include a fleet of pink taxis only for women, and more details will be announced soon.
Talking about transport reforms, Sharjeel Memon said Sindh is the first province in Pakistan to introduce electric buses.
Responding to criticism about the small number of scooters distributed, he said only 150 women had driving licences when the Pink Scooter Scheme started. “Today, around 25,000 women have applied for driving licences,” he said, calling it an important step for women’s empowerment.
He said the government is committed to giving scooters to all eligible women, adding, “Even if 100,000 women obtain licences, it is our responsibility to provide them with scooters.”
Memon also said the Sindh Revenue Board achieved the highest tax collection growth in the country, with 24% growth compared to 10% growth of the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR).
