Sindh rolls out monthly Rs2,000 fuel support for motorcyclists

KARACHI: Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah has announced a fuel subsidy of 20 liters per month for motorcyclists, amounting to PKR 2,000 per rider.

Addressing a press conference, the Chief Minister urged motorcyclists across Sindh to register via a dedicated Excise Department application designed to facilitate smooth registration. Sindh currently has approximately 6.7 million registered motorcycles.

He clarified that public transport cannot be made free, but the government is offering a diesel subsidy to public transport operators. Only vehicles with up-to-date tax clearance will be permitted to operate on the roads.

Commenting on regional developments, Murad Ali Shah highlighted the impact of the conflict imposed on Iran, noting Pakistan’s formal condolences following the assassination of Iran’s Supreme Leader. He stressed Pakistan’s constructive role in promoting ceasefire and regional stability.

The Chief Minister further noted that President Asif Ali Zardari convened all four provincial chief ministers during a critical period, while the federal government has taken coordinated and effective measures to address the situation.

Regarding domestic fuel policy, he explained that despite a global surge in oil prices, the government refrained from raising fuel prices for three weeks. However, due to increased fuel consumption in March, adjustments became unavoidable.

Murad Ali Shah emphasised that while petroleum subsidies have historically benefited both rich and poor, the current scheme will prioritise small farmers, in line with IMF recommendations, leaving larger landowners to bear costs independently.

He concluded by stressing that provincial and federal authorities continue to coordinate closely, and Pakistan remains committed to national security and fostering regional peace, undertaking ongoing measures to de-escalate tensions.
