Shonda Rhimes is staying at Netflix, renewing her overall deal with the streamer for another five years, a pact that will run through 2031.
The new agreement keeps Rhimes and her production company, Shondaland, led alongside longtime producing partner Betsy Beers, developing series, feature films and games exclusively for Netflix, along with merchandise and live events tied to the company’s projects.
Rhimes first moved to Netflix from Disney in 2017 in a deal widely seen as a turning point in the streaming era’s willingness to pay top dollar for exclusive creative talent, and she re-signed in 2021 before this latest renewal.
Netflix Chief Content Officer Bela Bajaria praised the partnership in a statement.
“I am thrilled to extend our partnership with the incomparable Shonda Rhimes. Few creative partnerships have shown what’s possible when a singular vision meets a global stage… Nearly a decade in, this partnership keeps proving that Shonda’s instincts aren’t just brilliant storytelling, they’re a blueprint for what a hit can become.”
Rhimes echoed the sentiment, saying, “For almost a decade, Netflix has provided Shondaland with the autonomy and support to tell our kind of stories, stories that both entertain and reflect diversity and humanity in a way that resonates with audiences around the world. I am so thankful to Ted, Bela and the entire Netflix team for their continued partnership, trust and enthusiasm. Let’s GO!”
The renewal comes as Bridgerton continues to be one of Netflix’s biggest global hits, having recorded 610 million views since its first season, with that debut season ranking as the platform’s seventh most-watched show ever.
Beyond Bridgerton, Shondaland’s Netflix output includes Inventing Anna, starring Julia Garner, and The Residence, led by Uzo Aduba, along with the Emmy-winning documentary Black Barbie.
The deal also continues Netflix’s support of Shondaland’s Ladder Program, an initiative designed to train underrepresented below-the-line creatives.
The renewal also solidifies Rhimes’s standing at the platform following the departure of other major creators, including Stranger Things‘ Duffer Brothers, who signed with Paramount in 2025, and Ryan Murphy, who returned to Disney in 2023.
