Tennis legend Serena Williams has confirmed her return to professional tennis after nearly four years away from the sport.

The 44-year-old will compete in the women’s doubles event at Queen’s Club in London, with the tournament beginning on June 8.

Williams has not played a competitive match since the 2022 US Open. Tournament organizers awarded her a wild card entry for the event. Reports suggest she will partner with Canadian teenager Victoria Mboko in the doubles competition.

News of her return quickly spread across the tennis world. Williams shared a video on social media showing herself on a tennis court. The video included the message, “Guess everybody heard the news.” She later posted another message saying, “Good news travels fast.”

In a statement released by tournament organizers, Williams said Queen’s Club was the perfect place to start this new chapter of her career. She added that grass court tennis had given her some of the most memorable moments of her life and that she was excited to compete again.

Williams is one of the most successful players in tennis history. She won 23 Grand Slam singles titles and spent 319 weeks as the world’s number one player. She also won 73 singles titles during her career and claimed 14 Grand Slam doubles titles alongside her sister, Venus Williams.

Rumors about a comeback have circulated for months. Speculation increased after Williams rejoined the anti-doping program in December, a requirement for players returning to professional competition.

Many tennis stars have welcomed the news. Coco Gauff said she would love the chance to play against Williams for the first time. Former world number one Martina Navratilova praised the comeback and said younger players would now have an opportunity to compete against one of the sport’s greatest champions.

Since leaving tennis in 2022, Williams has focused on family life and business projects. She welcomed her second daughter in 2023 and has invested in several companies through her venture capital firm, Serena Ventures.

With Wimbledon approaching later this month, many fans are now wondering whether Williams will also return to singles competition. Former champion John McEnroe said he was surprised by the decision but believes Williams may be aiming for another major title.
