Seoul Botanic park brings art into nature

Where greenery meets creativity, Seoul Botanic Park is turning into a living canvas where art, nature, and technology come together.

The park has introduced a new series of interactive programs linked to its flagship exhibition “A Tender Balance,” inviting visitors to explore the fragile connection between humans, innovation, and the environment.

Located in southwestern Seoul, the botanical complex launched its new public initiatives on Friday, offering visitors a chance to engage with contemporary eco-art through guided tours, creative workshops, and immersive activities focused on environmental awareness.

The exhibition, which will remain on display until May 2027, features large-scale installations across different areas of the park, transforming the botanical landscape into a space where art and nature interact.

The new public programs include docent-led tours, hands-on resin workshops, self-guided reflection activities, and creative sessions led by Korean installation artists such as Um A-rong, Lee Ji-yeon, and Jang Han-na.

The initiative reflects a growing global trend in which botanical gardens are moving beyond traditional roles as recreational spaces and using contemporary art to encourage discussions about climate change, sustainability, and ecological connections.

The exhibition spreads across four zones of Seoul Botanic Park, including its climate-controlled greenhouse and the historic Magok Cultural Center.

The restored building, originally constructed in 1928 during the Japanese colonial period as a drainage pump station, remains Korea’s only surviving modern industrial pumping facility preserved in its original architectural form.

Today, the historic structure serves as a black-box gallery featuring digital media artworks, including Ku Ki-jeong’s installation that explores the hidden rhythms of microscopic ecosystems.

Other featured works include Jang Han-na’s “New Rock Inuksuk,” which combines synthetic marine debris with tropical plants, and Um A-rong’s outdoor sculptures integrated into the park’s landscaped gardens.

Seoul Botanic Park Director Ouh Soo-jin said exhibitions placed within botanical environments provide visitors with a unique cultural experience where art and nature naturally influence each other.

“Exhibitions embedded within botanical spaces offer a unique cultural experience where art and nature naturally inform one another,” Ouh said. “Through these hands-on workshops and guided tours, we hope to give visitors an active space to reflect on environmental balance.”

The guided tours will take place weekly on Thursdays and Saturdays, while adult and youth creative workshops will continue through November. Public registration is available through the Seoul Metropolitan Government’s online service portal.
