Sandra Bullock is breaking her silence about the painful years she spent watching longtime partner Bryan Randall battle ALS — a loss she says began long before he died.
On the latest episode of SmartLess, Bullock, 62, revealed that Randall asked her to keep his diagnosis private.
She honoured that request, but carrying the secret through the COVID-19 pandemic left her feeling deeply isolated.
“I started grieving Bryan four years before he passed,” Bullock said, explaining that he “was ill for half of our relationship.”
“My person left a lot earlier than the body left,” she added. “I don’t think I ever dealt with that until after he passed, because you’re just on this treadmill, you know?”
Randall died in August 2023 at 57 after a three-year battle with ALS. His family confirmed at the time that he had chosen to keep his illness private.
Bullock also opened up about the reality of caring for Randall while raising their children. “You have to quietly plan. And I’m a very good planner with illness,” she said.
She admitted the hardest part was watching the children navigate Randall’s illness, especially her daughter, who saw him as a father figure.
For a long time, Bullock said only her sister, Gesine Bullock-Prado, knew what was happening. She eventually leaned on close friends, including Jennifer Aniston and Amanda Anka.
“When the physical illness was then coupled with the mental health aspect of things — and it’s something that people don’t talk about… it was a trifecta that was pretty dark.”
Bullock’s SmartLess episode arrives on all podcast platforms August 24. She will next return as Sally Owens in Practical Magic 2, hitting theaters September 10.
