    Punjab launches cash-for-bottles recycling campaign

Lahore: The Punjab government has launched an innovative bottle recycling initiative as part of the Chief Minister’s Green Credits Program.

This new initiative rewards citizens with cash for depositing plastic bottles, making eco-friendly behavior more rewarding than ever.

As part of the campaign, the government will reward citizens with Rs. 1,000 for submitting either 20 large (1.5-liter) plastic bottles or 40 small (0.5-liter) bottles through specially designed vending machines. Authorities will install these machines across four major universities in Lahore starting next month, with plans to expand the initiative to local markets and commercial areas throughout the city.

    Smart Machines Recycling:

Local teams, with support from Chinese technology, have assembled the plastic recycling machines and equipped them with a user-friendly interface. The process is simple:

    • Press Button A and insert your bottle.
      • Enter your phone number.
      • Press Button B to receive your green credits. The machine displays your credits on the screen, and you can also track them through a dedicated mobile app.

These machines use two collection compartments and operate digitally to ensure transparency and ease of use. The Punjab government has partnered with a private company led by Gulfam Abid, which will manage the installation and operation of the recycling machines.

Gulfam Abid states that Lahore generates 500 tons of plastic bottle waste every day. The project aims to recycle this waste into eco-friendly products such as sidewalk tiles, bricks, and road patching material.

Additionally, the project extends beyond individual participation. The program includes around 18,000 junkyards in Lahore. These vendors can use the app to request a pickup, and a company representative will collect the plastic bottles and pay them directly. This approach not only promotes recycling but also boosts local economic activity.

This initiative takes a major step toward tackling plastic pollution by actively engaging citizens in the solution. By combining financial incentives, modern technology, and public-private collaboration, Punjab sets a new benchmark for sustainable urban living.
