ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari on Tuesday approved the appointment of additional judges to five high courts across Pakistan and confirmed several existing additional judges as permanent judges, according to an official statement, as part of judicial appointments and administrative reforms.

The president approved the appointment of additional judges to the Lahore High Court (LHC), Sindh High Court (SHC), Peshawar High Court (PHC), Islamabad High Court (IHC) and Balochistan High Court (BHC).

The decision allows new judges to join the country’s high courts and strengthen the judicial system by filling vacant positions. The statement did not provide details about the names or number of judges appointed to each court.

In a separate decision, the president approved changes related to the salaries, allowances and pension benefits of Supreme Court judges. Under the approved measures, the financial benefits of Supreme Court judges will be brought closer to those provided to judges of the Federal Constitutional Court (FCC).

The president also approved amendments to the 1997 order that covers leave rules, pensions and other benefits for high court judges. The changes aim to update the existing framework related to judges service conditions.

Separately, President Zardari approved the appointment of Haroon Akhtar as Adviser to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Industries and Production.

The appointment adds Haroon Akhtar to the government’s economic team, where he will assist the prime minister on matters related to industrial growth and production policies.

The latest decisions come as Pakistan’s judiciary continues efforts to manage administrative issues, strengthen court structures and improve service conditions for judges.

The presidency has regularly approved judicial appointments after recommendations from relevant constitutional forums, including the Judicial Commission of Pakistan and parliamentary processes where required.

The statement did not mention when the newly appointed judges would officially begin their duties or provide further details about their responsibilities.
