President Trump prepares new import tariffs on dozens of countries

WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump is preparing to impose a new round of import tariffs on dozens of countries this week as temporary global duties are set to expire, according to a media report.

The report said the current 10% temporary global tariff, introduced under Section 122 of US trade law, is due to expire on July 24, paving the way for a new tariff regime.

Most countries are expected to remain subject to the 10% rate initially, although the Trump administration is reportedly preparing a legal framework to impose higher duties on selected trading partners.

The development follows the administration’s decision to impose a 50% tariff on Canadian automobiles and other goods, with the new duties scheduled to take effect next month.

The tariff plans come after the US Supreme Court ruled on Feb. 20, 2026, that the administration’s use of the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) to impose long-term tariffs was unconstitutional, finding that Congress had not granted the president authority to levy import duties under that law.

Following the ruling, the Trump administration relied on Section 122 to introduce a temporary 15% global tariff, which can remain in effect for only 150 days under US law. With that authority set to expire this week, the administration is now preparing its next phase of trade measures.

Earlier, President Donald Trump is threatening new tariffs on Canada after wildfire smoke blanketed much of the northern United States, following complaints from lawmakers.

Trump described the smoke as an unwanted intrusion, saying the U.S. is being “invaded by filthy, polluted, and unhealthy air,” and blamed Canada’s handling of its forests.

As of Friday, Canadian officials tracked roughly 888 active wildfires nationwide, most burning out of control, with over 190 in Ontario alone. Trump said he plans to call Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney to demand answers, accusing Canada of poorly maintaining its forests and brush.
