UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer is facing growing pressure after new Mandelson files were released, international media reported.
The documents reveal private discussions and disagreements among senior Labour Party members. Their release comes at a difficult time for Starmer as he prepares for important political challenges.

Starmer is expected to chair a Cabinet meeting today. The meeting comes after messages linked to Lord Peter Mandelson’s appointment as the UK ambassador to the United States exposed divisions within the Labour Party.
Lord Mandelson was removed from his ambassador role in September 2025. Leaked emails showed that he had sent supportive messages to Jeffrey Epstein while Epstein was facing imprisonment for sex related crimes. Earlier this year, MPs voted to force the release of documents connected to Mandelson’s time as ambassador.
The files include messages from senior Labour figures. In May 2025, after Labour suffered local election losses and lost the Runcorn by election, senior minister Pat McFadden expressed concern about political activity within the party. He said there was a lot of maneuvering taking place and suggested that the situation was not helping Starmer.
McFadden also criticized some Labour MPs. He said many were focused on the wrong issues. He argued that discussions often centered on finding new taxes to fund benefits rather than addressing broader challenges.
The documents also show concerns about welfare reforms. In June 2025, McFadden warned that a defeat over the welfare bill could damage Starmer’s authority. He said that withdrawing or heavily changing the bill would weaken the Prime Minister’s position.
McFadden later became Work and Pensions Secretary in September 2025. In that role, he took responsibility for the UK’s welfare system.
The files also reveal criticism from Lord Mandelson. He reportedly said that Starmer lacked energy and direction. Mandelson also questioned Chancellor Rachel Reeves ability to explain how the government would achieve economic growth.
In a message sent to McFadden in July 2025, Mandelson described Downing Street as struggling and lacking confidence. He said the Prime Minister’s office needed major changes and a clearer sense of purpose.
The documents also contain comments about government policy making. Mandelson told Pensions Minister Torsten Bell that the government was not handling policy effectively.
Bell agreed and said many people appeared to believe that policy decisions were someone else’s responsibility. Mandelson responded by saying that poor input would naturally lead to poor results.
