PDMA DG ensures timely removal of rainwater in Karachi

KARACHI: The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has deployed staff, machinery, and equipment across Karachi’s main roads to deal with the impact of heavy rains, according to the source.

According to DG PDMA Sindh Salman Shah, 13 dewatering pumps have been installed on key arteries of the city, while six rescue vehicles have been stationed at different locations to assist citizens. He said PDMA teams are on high alert to handle any emergency arising from the rain.

Shah added that Advisor for Rehabilitation Giyan Chand Essarani has directed PDMA staff to ensure a quick response. “Drainage of rainwater must be carried out on time and at all costs,” he stressed.

Despite these efforts, the latest spell of rain created severe traffic jams across Karachi. Long queues of vehicles were reported on Shahrah-e-Faisal, where many motorcycles broke down on flooded roads. Waterlogging in the Korangi Industrial Area and overflowing drains worsened the situation, while M.A. Jinnah Road, Gurumandir, Lasbela, and Liaquatabad also faced massive gridlocks.

Traffic congestion spread to Saddar, Tariq Road, Mauripur Road, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Malir, Kala Pul, Qayyumabad, Brooks Chowrangi, Jail Chowrangi, Essa Nagri, Hassan Square, and University Road. Even the Lyari Expressway and roads near the National Stadium were choked.

Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah directed traffic police to improve flow across the city and ordered immediate deployment of machinery in areas with rainwater accumulation. He emphasized that Karachi’s drainage system must remain fully functional and assured citizens that all possible facilities would be provided during the rain-related disruptions.
