Pakistan’s mediation in Iran-US-Israel conflict: A strategic perspective

Pakistan’s reputation as a mediator has been bolstered by the confidence and trust expressed by Iran and US.

Islamabad: Lt Gen (R) M Saeed, former Chief of General Staff of the Pakistan Army, emphasized the complexities and significance of Pakistan’s ongoing mediation efforts between Iran, the United States, and Israel. In a recent analysis, he expressed cautious optimism while highlighting the challenges and international support surrounding Pakistan’s role.

According to Lt Gen Saeed, Pakistan’s reputation as a mediator has been bolstered by the confidence and trust expressed by Iran and the US in the informal process led by Pakistan’s foreign ministers. He noted that when conflicting parties trust their mediator, traditional power dynamics become secondary to acceptance and legitimacy.

The former military leader pointed out that key international players, including the United Nations and China, have lauded Pakistan’s diplomatic initiative, fostering hopes for a return to dialogue and the de-escalation of hostilities. Regional leaders from the Middle East have also acknowledged Pakistan’s relevance, particularly given Iran’s distrust of other regional actors.

Drawing parallels with other global conflicts, Lt Gen Saeed highlighted that mediation efforts whether in the Ukraine war or regional disputes involving Pakistan’s neighbors often face setbacks. He questioned whether the international community has condemned failed mediations or mediators, emphasizing that even modest efforts in conflict resolution are globally recognized if conducted in good faith.

He reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to diplomacy, recalling its ‘good faith’ during the June 25 conflict, which was acknowledged by both Iran and the US.
