Pakistan’s Independence Day gets a global Doodle

A Pakistani flag is flying across Google’s homepage on Aug. 14 as the technology giant marks Pakistan’s 79th Independence Day, placing the country’s national symbol before a global audience in a simple yet striking tribute.

The special Doodle features the Google logo against a clear blue sky, with the Pakistani flag floating prominently across the design. The green-and-white colors remain at the center of the visual, giving the national celebration a distinctly international presence.

More than a festive gesture, the imagery conveys a sense of pride, hope and forward movement. The flag rising against the open sky suggests a nation looking toward the future while remaining connected to the history and aspirations that shaped it.

For Pakistanis, the national flag represents far more than a symbol displayed on Independence Day. It reflects the country’s journey since 1947, the sacrifices surrounding its creation and the hopes of generations who have contributed to its progress.

The Google tribute also places Pakistan’s Independence Day in a broader global context. As Pakistan continues to engage with countries around the world through diplomacy, partnerships, cultural exchanges and international cooperation, the appearance of its flag on one of the world’s most widely used digital platforms gives the celebration added international visibility.

The display comes as Pakistan highlights its longstanding relationships and growing engagement with the international community, including cooperation in areas such as trade, technology, development and security.

Google’s Doodle tradition dates back to 1998, when the company’s first-ever Doodle featured the Burning Man festival. The tradition has since expanded into a global platform for recognizing national holidays, cultural celebrations, historic milestones and notable personalities.

The company’s 2000 Bastille Day Doodle marked one of its early international celebrations, helping establish the tradition of using Google’s homepage to connect significant occasions with audiences worldwide.

This year’s Pakistani design uses a simple combination of the national flag, an open blue sky and Google’s familiar logo, but the visual carries a broader message of identity, optimism and ambition.

As Pakistan celebrates 79 years of independence, Google’s tribute places the country’s flag on a global digital stage, connecting a historic national celebration with people far beyond Pakistan’s borders.
