Pakistan’s freelancers hit record $1.76 billion in export earnings

Pakistan’s freelance workforce has set a new record earning $1.76 billion in export income during fiscal year 2026, marking a 78% increase from the previous year.

In June 2026 alone, freelancers brought in $164 million up 69% compared to the same month last year. The latest figures reflect a broader trend of accelerating growth across Pakistan’s digital economy, driven by the country’s growing pool of tech talent and entrepreneurial workforce.

Freelance export earnings have climbed sharply since FY-2021, when the sector generated $396 million. The following year saw earnings hold roughly steady at $397 million, a 0.25% increase. FY-2023 saw a dip to $364 million, down 8% year over year, before the sector rebounded strongly.

FY-2024 earnings rose to $505 million, up 39%, followed by a sharp jump to $985 million in FY-2025, a 95% increase. This year’s total of $1.76 billion represents a 78% rise from FY-2025, and marks a 212% increase over just the past three years.

With an estimated 2.5 to 3 million freelancers currently active in Pakistan, average monthly earnings per freelancer have grown substantially. In 2021, freelancers earned an average of just over $12 per month.

By 2026, that figure climbed to more than $53 per month, a 4.4 times increase, or 440% growth, over five years.

Pakistan now ranks 16th out of 193 countries in freelance related rankings, placing it in the top 9% globally and ahead of major economies including China and Vietnam.

The country also holds a talent score of 80 out of 100, ranking 8th globally and ahead of every country in the European Union, Middle East, and Africa included in the index.

Industry observers say continued growth will depend on sustained policy support, including digital skills training, simplified cross border payment systems, a stable and competitive tax framework, expanded high speed broadband and 5G access, and stronger global positioning through initiatives like Tech Destination Pakistan.

As the sector continues to expand, officials and industry watchers say Pakistan’s export economy is expected to increasingly rely not just on physical goods, but on talent, technology, and digital services as key growth drivers going forward.
