LEEDS: England defeated Pakistan by 103 runs in the first Test at Headingley on Friday, taking a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.

Pakistan, chasing a target of 239, were bowled out for 135 in their second innings. Mohammad Rizwan top-scored with 41, while Shan Masood made 29 and Abdullah Shafique scored 15.

Imam-ul-Haq was dismissed for a duck, captain Salman Ali Agha scored four and Aizaan Awais made nine. Saud Shakeel contributed 14, Khurram Shahzad eight and Ali Usman seven.

England’s Ollie Robinson, Josh Tongue and Jofra Archer claimed three wickets each to bowl Pakistan out.

England had posted 409 in their first innings, taking a 238-run lead after Pakistan were dismissed for 171. Harry Brook, Jordan Cox, Joe Root and Dan Lawrence scored half-centuries for England.

The second Test is scheduled to begin at Lord’s on Aug. 27.

After first test, Pakistan’s senior batter Mohammad Rizwan came under criticism from English commentators during the team’s second innings in the first Test against England at Headingley.

With Pakistan struggling at 111-7 in the 32nd over, Rizwan took a single from the first ball of Ollie Robinson’s over, bringing tailender Khurram Shahzad to the crease.

Shahzad was dismissed from the very next delivery, caught by Jordan Cox at slip.

English commentators questioned Rizwan’s decision to expose the tailender to the remaining deliveries of the over, describing the move as unusual given Pakistan’s precarious position.

They said Rizwan, who has played 46 Tests, should have taken greater responsibility himself rather than allowing the tailender to face the England bowlers.

Pakistan were eventually bowled out for 135 in their second innings, losing the Leeds Test by 103 runs.
