ISLAMABAD: Pakistan condemned Israeli airstrikes on Syria’s “Abu al-Duhur Airbase” near Aleppo, saying the unprovoked attack violated international law and threatened regional peace and stability.

The Foreign Office said the Israeli occupation forces carried out the strikes near the Turkish border as tensions grew over reports that Syria could allow Turkish troops to deploy at the airbase.

“Such provocative actions constitute a flagrant violation of international law,” the Foreign Office said in a statement, warning that the strikes could further weaken peace and stability in the region.

Pakistan expressed solidarity with the Syrian people and reaffirmed its support for Syria’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, peace and prosperity.

The Foreign Office also called on the international community to take action against what it described as repeated violations of international law by Israeli forces.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office said that Syria was close to violating a security “status quo” agreement. The office said such a deployment would threaten Israel’s security and that Israel would not accept it.

Turkey rejected the Israeli government’s claims. The Turkish presidency said Netanyahu’s statements reflected what it called an attempt to pursue expansionist and destabilizing policies ahead of elections in Israel.

Turkey said lasting peace in the region could be achieved only if Israel respected international law and ended what it described as aggressive and coercive policies.

NATO member with the alliance’s second largest military, has become one of Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa’s key allies. Ankara has accused Israel of seeking to destabilize Syria and weaken its new administration while repeatedly calling for international action to protect Syria’s territorial integrity.

The United States is also working to reduce the risk of a direct confrontation between the countries. Tom Barrack, the U.S. special presidential envoy for Syria and Iraq, told Reuters after the strikes that Washington was working to establish a mechanism to prevent conflicts among Israel, Turkey and Syria.
