ISLAMABAD: Pakistan is planning major upgrades to its motorway and highway system. The government wants to introduce a modern Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) and a cashless toll collection system. The goal is to improve road safety and make travel faster for motorists.

Under the new toll system, drivers will not need to stop at toll plazas. Vehicles will pass through without barriers, helping reduce traffic jams and saving travel time. The system will also connect with the safe city network. This will help traffic officials and law enforcement agencies monitor roads and respond quickly to accidents and other incidents.

The government also plans to improve facilities at motorway service areas, travelers will have access to better services and improved security. Motorway Police officers will remain available at these locations around the clock.

Emergency services such as Rescue 1122 teams, ambulances, and fire brigades will also be placed at important points along major routes.

Several popular northern and tourist roads will receive special attention. These include the Jaglot–Skardu Road, the Mansehra–Kaghan–Naran Road, and the Murree Expressway.

Authorities will install stronger safety barriers and make other road safety improvements, temporary rest stops on these routes will also be upgraded into permanent service areas.

Federal Minister for Communications Abdul Aleem Khan has directed officials to speed up the modernization process. He wants surveillance cameras, security systems, communication networks, and electronic toll collection to work through one digital platform. This will help improve traffic management and road operations across the country.

The project is part of a wider effort to bring Pakistan’s road network closer to international standards. Officials believe the upgrades will provide safer, smoother, and more efficient travel for road users throughout the country.
