KARACHI: From classrooms and hospitals to the battlefield and public service, Pakistan’s minority communities have played a vital role in shaping the country’s journey.

As the nation observes National Minorities Day on August 11, the focus remains on recognising their contributions, protecting equal rights and reaffirming the values of religious freedom, tolerance and peaceful coexistence.

The day is observed annually across Pakistan to honour the role of minority communities in national development and highlight their contributions in various fields, including education, healthcare, defence and public service.

National Minorities Day was officially introduced on August 11, 2009, during the tenure of former Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani, with the aim of promoting awareness about minority rights and recognising their role in Pakistan’s progress.

The observance is also linked to the historic speech of Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah, who addressed the Constituent Assembly on August 11, 1947, and emphasised equal rights and religious freedom for all citizens regardless of religion, caste or creed.

In his message on National Minorities Day, President Asif Ali Zardari called for renewed efforts to build a Pakistan based on justice, equality, tolerance and service to humanity.

“We must ensure that our future generations inherit a Pakistan that stands as a beacon of peace, progress, stability and mutual respect,” the president said.

He extended greetings to all Pakistanis, especially members of minority communities, and acknowledged their significant contributions to the country’s development.

President Zardari said minorities had made valuable contributions in areas including conflicts, wars, healthcare, education and other sectors of national life, adding that the nation remained proud of their services, patriotism and dedication.

Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif said Pakistan observes National Minorities Day with a commitment to recognising the contributions of minority communities and ensuring their inclusion in the national mainstream.

In his message, the prime minister described minorities as an essential part of Pakistan’s social and cultural identity, saying their diversity reflects the true spirit of the country.

He recalled Quaid-e-Azam’s historic remarks during the Constituent Assembly session on August 11, 1947, in which he affirmed that every citizen had the freedom to practice their faith and that religion would not affect equal citizenship rights.

Prime Minister Shehbaz said the Quaid’s vision continues to guide Pakistan’s values of unity, peaceful coexistence, mutual respect and equal opportunities for all citizens.

National Minorities Day serves as a reminder of Pakistan’s commitment to safeguarding citizens’ rights and promoting harmony among diverse communities across the country.
