ISLAMABAD: Differences between the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) and the federal government over the upcoming budget remain unresolved, with negotiations failing to make significant progress, according to sources familiar with the discussions.

Sources said the matter will now be taken up at the level of senior leadership from both sides in an effort to break the deadlock.

A meeting between the PPP’s top leadership and senior government officials is expected within the next one to two days, the sources said.

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar is expected to meet PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari and Co-Chairman Asif Ali Zardari as part of efforts to build consensus on the budget.

Despite the ongoing differences, government sources said the federal budget will be presented on June 10 as planned.

The PPP has been a key ally of the ruling coalition, and its support is considered important for the smooth passage of major legislative and financial measures in parliament.

Meanwhile, Pakistan’s Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb indicated that the federal budget will be presented on June 10, saying the government is working to deliver a meaningful fiscal plan while minimizing the burden of new taxes.

Speaking informally with journalists, Aurangzeb described recent consultations as “very positive” and said another round of meetings would be held later this week.

He emphasized the need to maintain coordination with the International Monetary Fund (IMF), coalition partners and other stakeholders during the budget-making process.

“We will present a meaningful budget on June 10,” Aurangzeb said, adding that the government’s priority is to improve revenue collection through stronger enforcement measures and by expanding the tax net.

The finance minister said every effort is being made to avoid imposing new taxes, while focusing instead on bringing more individuals and businesses into the documented economy.
