The PMD warned that communities living in low lying areas and along riverbanks could face sudden flooding.

ISLAMABAD: The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a flood and landslide alert as a new spell of monsoon rain is expected to affect several parts of Pakistan through Monday.

Pakistan’s weather agency has warned of a higher risk of glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs) in Gilgit-Baltistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa as heavy rain and warmer temperatures are expected in the coming days.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) issued the alert also officials said a fresh westerly weather system is expected to bring moderate to heavy rain and thunderstorms to the country’s northern mountain regions next week.

The department said temperatures in many glaciated valleys are already above normal. The combination of warm weather and rainfall could speed up the melting of snow and glaciers.

As more ice melts, water levels in rivers are expected to rise. Existing glacial lakes could grow larger, and new lakes may also form.

The PMD warned that communities living in low lying areas and along riverbanks could face sudden flooding if a glacial lake bursts. It also said flash floods remain a major risk in vulnerable areas.

Officials added that the rapid growth of glacial lakes could weaken natural ice or rock barriers, increasing the chance of a glacial lake outburst flood.

The department also warned that melting frozen ground, combined with excess water, could trigger mudslides and debris flows in mountain areas.

Authorities have advised local administrations and residents in vulnerable regions to stay alert and take necessary safety precautions during the forecast period.
