More than 93,000 children in Pakistan are found to be affected by tuberculosis each year.

More than 93,000 children in Pakistan are found to be affected by tuberculosis each year.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), these figures were presented at a joint conference of three organizations, which reviewed the overall situation of tuberculosis in Pakistan.

The WHO stated that data on tuberculosis in children was shared at the joint conference, noting that Pakistan has 669,000 registered tuberculosis patients.

Children account for 14 per cent of tuberculosis cases in Pakistan. The country ranks fifth globally in the burden of the disease, while 73 per cent of the tuberculosis burden in the Eastern Mediterranean region falls on Pakistan.

The conference was also informed that joint efforts are under way in Pakistan, involving the World Health Organization, the Ministry of Health and Médecins Sans Frontières, to improve treatment for children and curb the spread of the disease. The meeting was organized with the cooperation of the WHO, the Ministry of Health and the Pakistan Paediatric Association.
