MANCHESTER: Manchester City sparked a transfer frenzy on Tuesday by signing Argentine midfielder Enzo Fernandez from Chelsea for a reported British record-equalling £125 million ($169.08 million), completing a lavish summer spending spree aimed at strengthening the squad and reclaiming the Premier League title.

The 25-year-old Fernandez confirmed his Chelsea departure on social media before City officially announced the deal about 30 minutes after the transfer window closed. Fernandez has signed a five-year contract with City and said he was thrilled to join one of England’s most successful clubs.

“Every player wants to be part of a club like this because everyone knows how well-run City are,” Fernandez said on the club’s website. “I could not be happier to be here, and I am ready for the challenge of helping City continue winning trophies.”

The blockbuster move equals the British transfer record set when Liverpool signed Swedish striker Alexander Isak from Newcastle United last year.

Fernandez joined Chelsea from Benfica in January 2023 for £106.8 million, then a British record. During his time in London, he helped Chelsea win the Conference League and Club World Cup last year.

The move makes Fernandez the first player to be sold for more than £100 million twice in his career. He will also reunite with City manager Enzo Maresca, who previously worked with him at Chelsea before leaving the London club in January.

Fernandez enjoyed a strong 2025-26 campaign, scoring 15 goals and providing seven assists in all competitions for Chelsea. He was also an important player for Argentina at the 2026 World Cup, scoring in the last 16 and semifinal as Argentina finished runner-up to Spain.

City Director of Football Hugo Viana praised Fernandez as a complete midfielder with technical ability, determination and a strong scoring record.
