KINGSTON: Jimmy Cliff, the iconic Jamaican singer who, alongside Bob Marley, brought reggae, ska, and rocksteady music to global prominence, has passed away at the age of 81.
His death was reportedly caused by a seizure followed by pneumonia.
Born James Chambers on July 30, 1944, during a hurricane in St. James Parish, Jamaica, Cliff moved with his father in the 1950s from their rural home to the capital, Kingston, determined to make his mark in the music world.
At just 14, he gained national fame with his self-written song “Hurricane Hattie”. Over his illustrious career, he recorded more than 30 albums and performed worldwide, including in Paris, Brazil, and at the 1964 World Fair in New York.
The following year, Island Records producer Chris Blackwell, who had previously launched Bob Marley and the Wailers internationally, invited Cliff to work with him in the United Kingdom, further elevating his career.
Cliff also ventured into acting, starring in the 1972 classic film The Harder They Come, which not only introduced reggae music to international audiences but also portrayed the gritty realities of Jamaican life beyond the island’s idyllic beaches and tourist spots.
Among his most celebrated works are “You Can Get It If You Really Want It”, “Many Rivers To Cross”, and his cover of Johnny Nash’s “I Can See Clearly Now”, featured in the 1993 film Cool Runnings. He also offered a distinctive rendition of Cat Stevens’ “Wild World”. His songs were not only musical masterpieces but also reflected his humanitarian and social consciousness.
In a 2019 interview, as his vision began to fail, Cliff said:
“When I’ve achieved all my ambitions, then I guess that I will have done it and I can just say ‘great’.”
