QUETTA: Security forces killed a senior militant commander during an intelligence-based operation (IBO) in Balochistan province.

Officials said Afghan militant commander Basir, described as a key leader of a banned group, was killed during an encounter in the Sararan area of Arjoom Killi. One associate was arrested during the operation.

According to security sources, the commander was traced in the Shaban area based on intelligence information. Authorities said he was involved in planning multiple attacks against security forces and was linked to previous militant activities in the region.

Officials further claimed Basir was the son of another Afghan militant commander and had served as an operational leader for infiltration attempts in the area.

Security officials said he had previously been involved in coordinating a group of suicide bombers that were killed in a separate operation earlier this year.

The military described the latest operation as a significant success under ongoing counterterrorism efforts.

Earlier, Security forces killed 22 militants during an ongoing sanitisation operation in Shewa area of North Waziristan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa following intelligence reports of militant presence.

According to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the operation began on May 17 in the general area of Shewa, where troops engaged militants in an intense exchange of fire.

The ISPR said the killed militants were part of what it described as “Fitna-al-Khwarij,” a term used by the state for outlawed insurgent elements allegedly operating in the region.
