Kelsea Ballerini is speaking up in defense of rising country singer Stella Lefty after backlash erupted online following her Grand Ole Opry debut.

Lefty, 24, made her debut performance at the historic Nashville venue on September 2, performing her breakout hit Boston alongside Something to Lose with boyfriend Vincent Mason.

Before taking the stage, she shared a sweet backstage moment with two young guests from St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, singing an acoustic version of Boston with the girls as part of the evening’s special programming honouring St. Jude patients.

Rather than celebrating the moment, however, comments on the Opry’s Instagram post quickly turned critical, with some users accusing Lefty of being a “nepo baby” or “industry plant” and questioning whether her wealthy background, she’s the daughter of Groupon co-founder and Tempus AI CEO Eric Lefkofsky, undermined her legitimacy as an artist.

Ballerini, who was inducted as an Opry member in 2019, stepped into the comments to push back.

“Opry member chiming in!! yes, the opry is about honoring the legacies and the people that have inspired both me and her,” she wrote.

“But, from different backgrounds and hometowns and generations, we can find ways to say and sing things that resonate with people that fill the seats…and that is always the goal right?”

She continued, “This backstage moment is beautiful. and y’all in the comments continue to not honor the people the actual opry house opens its arms to. it’s about celebration of all kinds of country music…new, old, traditional, current, however you wanna say it. it’s all important.”

Ballerini later added a pointed reminder about what the video actually depicted: “DOUBLING DOWN that this is a video of her singing to st jude’s patients. yall go get some sleep.”

Ballerini’s comment drew a largely supportive response from fans, with more than 1,000 likes within 16 hours.

Artist manager Chris Kappy, known for his work with Luke Combs, also weighed in with his own defense of Lefty, writing, “Success isn’t based on money, or every act I manage would be in arenas and stadiums because I would just buy it… No amount of money buys success, it’s the music. It always has been and always will be the music.”

This isn’t the first time Lefty has faced this kind of criticism since her rapid rise earlier this year, with some fans continuing to question whether her family’s wealth, rather than her music, has fueled her success.
