Karachi: The 35th National Games began in Karachi with a spectacular opening ceremony, officially inaugurated by Pakistan Peoples Party Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari.
Renowned athlete Arshad Nadeem had the honor of lighting the Games torch, marking the commencement of the prestigious national sporting event.
The torch relay featured Olympian Qamar Ibrahim, who passed it to Samir Hussain, Naseem Hameed, Saadi Abbas, and Islahuddin, culminating with Arshad Nadeem, who completed a ceremonial lap before igniting the cauldron.
Bilawal Bhutto Zardari formally announced the start of the Games, which will be held across 24 venues in Karachi until December 13, featuring over 10,000 athletes competing in 32 sports from all provinces of Pakistan.

Speaking at the ceremony, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari welcomed the athletes and praised the efforts to provide a positive platform for Pakistan’s youth.
The event was attended by dignitaries including Governor Sindh Kamran Tessori, Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah, Sports Minister and Sindh Olympic Association President Sardar Muhammad Bakhsh Khan Mehr, and Pakistan Olympic Association President Choudhry Arif Saeed.
Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah highlighted the significance of hosting the Games after nearly two decades, saying, “Today, we witness the talent and diversity of Pakistan’s provinces. This event is a matter of pride for the province and the nation.” He also thanked Bilawal Bhutto Zardari for attending as the chief guest, emphasizing his support for empowering youth.
The first gold medal of the Games was claimed by Lieutenant Misbah of the Pakistan Army in the 50-meter One Rifle event. The Pakistan Army dominated the shooting competitions, securing four gold medals, and took an early lead in the medal tally.
