Jodie Comer says ‘Free Guy’ helped her realize she needed more serious roles

Jodie Comer is opening up about how one of her biggest films made her rethink the kind of roles she wanted to take.

In a recent chat with British GQ, the 32-year-old actress reflected on her experience filming the 2021 movie Free Guy with Ryan Reynolds.

Comer praised the project was fun and the team was “gentle, inclusive, and supportive,” however she admitted it left her feeling something was missing.

“I wasn’t stretching or discovering,” she told the outlet in an interview published on June 9. “I realized I wasn’t exercising the emotional part of myself.”

In Free Guy, Comer played Millie, a character in a video game world who helps Reynolds’ character, a non-playable character, uncover a major secret.

Despite the success of the film, Comer realized she wanted roles that challenge her more deeply.

She told the outlet that she finds true fulfillment in emotionally demanding parts. “If the instincts aren’t there, if I’m not excited by it, then I just don’t want to go near it because then I’m pulling from an artificial place,” she added. “It feels almost dishonest with myself.”

Comer’s next project is the upcoming movie 28 Years Later which is set to release on June 20.
