Late-night television host Jimmy Kimmel has publicly defended a controversial joke he made about First Lady Melania Trump in which he referred to her as an “expectant widow.”
The remark delivered during a comedy sketch aired last Thursday has since triggered widespread debate after a violent shooting incident near the White House Correspondents’ Dinner in Washington, D.C.
The First Lady strongly condemned the comment describing it as “hateful and violent,” while the White House reportedly urged ABC to take disciplinary action against the comedian. The backlash intensified following a shooting near the Correspondents’ Dinner venue just days later, an event attended by President Donald Trump and Melania Trump.
Authorities confirmed that a gunman opened fire near the event location prompting a major security response. Investigators later suggested that the attack may have been directed at individuals linked to the Trump administration further heightening political tensions surrounding the incident.
In his defense Kimmel clarified during his monologue on Jimmy Kimmel Live! that the comment was intended as a “light roast,” referencing the 23-year age gap between the president and his wife. He strongly rejected claims that the joke could be interpreted as incitement, emphasizing that it was purely comedic in nature.
Kimmel stated that the remark was meant as satire and not in any way a call for violence or assassination. He also highlighted his long-standing stance against gun violence, stressing that he has consistently spoken out on the issue throughout his career.

President Donald Trump also reacted strongly expressing support for those criticizing Kimmel and stating on Truth Social that the joke amounted to a “call to violence.” He further called for ABC and Disney to take immediate action against the host.
The controversy escalated further after the resurfacing of the original clip online in the aftermath of the shooting, sparking renewed backlash on social media and calls from some users for Kimmel’s removal from television.
Meanwhile authorities confirmed that the suspected shooter identified as Cole Tomas Allen, has been arrested and charged in court with attempting to assassinate the president.
