Jim Carrey’s César Awards appearance sparks debate

Paris : Hollywood star Jim Carrey’s appearance at the 2026 César Film Awards has ignited widespread debate after makeup artist and drag performer Alexis Stone claimed he was responsible for the actor’s look at the prestigious ceremony.

Stone alleged that he impersonated Carrey during the comedian’s February 26 appearance in Paris, amid online speculation that the actor appeared “different” and, according to some viewers, “unrecognisable.”

In a post shared on Instagram, Stone wrote, “Alexis Stone as Jim Carrey in Paris,” alongside photographs of Carrey at the event and an image showing a mask, prosthetic teeth, and a dark wig resembling the actor’s new straight black hairstyle.

The claim quickly divided social media users. Some appeared convinced by the transformation, with one follower commenting that conspiracy theorists were having “a field day,” while another suggested Carrey was likely “laughing out loud” at the speculation.

Others, however, expressed scepticism. Several users argued that Stone was “playing” with the public and questioned the authenticity of the claim, noting that the artist typically releases detailed YouTube transformation videos to document his work. Some also speculated that the mask image may have been generated using artificial intelligence.

During the ceremony, Carrey accepted an honorary award and delivered his speech entirely in French, showcasing his trademark animated facial expressions on stage.

Observers pointed out that such exaggerated expressions would be difficult to execute convincingly while wearing a prosthetic mask, casting doubt on the impersonation claim.

Stone is known for his intricate celebrity transformations, having previously recreated public figures including Glenn Close, Anna Wintour, and Donatella Versace. Representatives for Carrey have not issued any official response regarding the allegation.
