Jason Gillespie set to lead Hyderabad in historic PSL 11 season

Former Australian pace legend Jason Gillespie is poised to helm the Hyderabad franchise, the Pakistan Super League’s newest addition, ahead of the landmark 11th edition set to kick off on March 26.

The appointment quickly gained traction across social media before being confirmed by sources, who said Gillespie will officially take charge as Hyderabad’s head coach.

Gillespie, 50, brings vast international experience, having previously served in Pakistan’s coaching framework after being appointed Test head coach in April 2024, working alongside Gary Kirsten, who oversaw the white-ball sides.

However, his tenure was short-lived, as he resigned in December 2024 ahead of Pakistan’s Test tour of South Africa, amid reports of strained relations with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and difficulties aligning with the team’s management structure.

PSL 11 represents a major milestone for the league, expanding to eight teams for the first time, with Hyderabad and Sialkot entering the competition as fresh franchises.

Hyderabad, owned by Fawad Sarwar, secured its PSL slot after placing the winning bid of Rs1.75 billion (approximately $6.25 million) during the franchise auction.

Meanwhile, the PCB has officially announced February 11 as the date for the PSL 11 Player Auction. The confirmation followed a high-level auction workshop chaired by PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi and PSL CEO Salman Naseer, attended by representatives from all eight franchises, PSL officials, PCB executives, members of Pakistan’s T20 World Cup squad, and other capped players.

The session covered critical operational aspects, including base player prices, franchise budgets, squad composition limits, retention policies, and direct signings laying the groundwork for what promises to be the most competitive and commercially significant PSL season yet.
