TOKYO: Japan has introduced an artificial intelligence-powered robot monk designed to provide spiritual advice and assist with religious rituals, as the country grapples with an ageing population and a shortage of clergy.
The humanoid robot, named “Buddharoid,” was presented in Tokyo on February 25, 2026, by researchers from Kyoto University.
Developed by Seiji Kumagai of the Institute for the Future of Human Society, the robot integrates advanced artificial intelligence models to respond to sensitive spiritual questions and offer Buddhist guidance. Researchers say the innovation could help temples manage religious duties amid Japan’s shrinking workforce.
Advanced AI and Humanoid Design
Buddharoid operates on upgraded language systems, including models developed by OpenAI. Kumagai installed his enhanced “BuddhaBotPlus” software into a Chinese-made Unitree G1 humanoid robot, creating a two-legged machine capable of walking, gesturing and delivering spoken advice in a calm and composed tone.
During a media event held at a Kyoto temple, the robot appeared dressed in a simple grey robe, with its hands joined in prayer. When asked about overthinking, Buddharoid cited Buddhist scriptures, encouraging mindfulness and emotional control.
Bridging Faith and Technology
Unlike traditional chatbots, Buddharoid combines conversational AI with a physical presence, allowing worshippers to interact with it in temple settings. Developers say the robot has been trained on complex Buddhist texts, enabling it to answer spiritual queries that individuals may hesitate to discuss with others.
Experts believe the integration of robotics and AI technology could reshape religious practices in Japan. However, Kyoto University acknowledged that ethical considerations remain, particularly regarding the expanding role of humanoid robots in performing priestly duties.
