Instagram introduces replace audio feature to change music on old posts

Instagram has introduced a new feature that addresses a problem many creators have faced for years by allowing them to change the music on feed posts and carousel posts after they have been published without losing likes, comments or shares.

Previously, changing the audio on a post meant deleting it and uploading it again. As a result, the post lost its existing engagement and had to start over. While this was only an inconvenience for casual users, it created a bigger challenge for creators who rely on engagement.

The new Replace Audio feature removes that problem. Users can open a published post, tap the three-dot menu, select Edit, choose Audio, and pick a new track. They can also select the part of the song they want before saving the changes. The post retains its existing likes, comments, shares and placement.

Creators can change the audio as many times as they want. Instagram creator product marketing lead Jimmy O’Keefe said replacing the audio does not give a post any algorithmic advantage.

According to Instagram, changing the audio neither improves nor reduces a post’s performance. The post remains unchanged except for the updated soundtrack.

The feature also gives creators more flexibility. They can update the music on older posts to match current trends, change the soundtrack on sponsored posts to reflect new brand guidelines, or replace the music on travel videos to better match different seasons without deleting and reposting the content.
