Hong Kong to host K-pop extravaganza after 10-year hiatus

K-pop is ready to make a spectacular comeback in mainland China, and fans couldn’t be more thrilled.

Dream Concert 2026 is set to light up Hong Kong this February, promising two days of music, energy, and unforgettable performances potentially ending a decade-long unofficial ban on Korean entertainment in the region.

The concert, scheduled for February 6 and 7 at the iconic Kai Tak Sports Park, will be broadcast across mainland China by Hunan Television, a state-run channel.

Organisers are calling this event historic, highlighting it as the first K-pop concert to reach the Chinese audience since cultural exchanges were cut off.

The unofficial ban began in 2017 after South Korea agreed to host a U.S. missile defense system, halting Korean music, TV shows, and live performances in China. But recent diplomatic developments have reignited hopes: Chinese President Xi Jinping visited South Korea last month and held a summit with President Lee Jae Myung, discussing cultural ties and paving the way for renewed collaboration.

From Entertainment, the South Korean company behind the event, emphasised the momentous nature of this concert, saying, “It’s the first time K-pop is returning to mainland China after years of silence a true cultural milestone.”

Although the lineup hasn’t been announced, anticipation is electric, and fans are already counting down the days.

The announcement also sent K-pop stocks soaring: HYBE rose 5%, SM Entertainment jumped 8%, JYP Entertainment gained 3%, and YG Entertainment increased 4%, reflecting the industry’s growing momentum and investor excitement.

Dream Concert has previously traveled internationally, with its 2025 edition held in Abu Dhabi. Hong Kong has also hosted CJ ENM’s annual MAMA Awards, making it a prime hub for bringing Korean pop music to a global audience.

With further cultural exchanges and high-profile visits planned for next year, Dream Concert 2026 isn’t just a concert it’s a celebration of K-pop’s unstoppable energy, a symbol of rekindled connections, and a moment fans in China have been waiting for over a decade.
