A profound shadow of sorrow has engulfed the family of Grammy-winning rapper and record producer Lil Jon, following the tragic demise of his son, Nathan Smith.

In a joint statement with Smith’s mother, Nicole Smith, Lil Jon conveyed the immeasurable anguish of losing a child and described the heartbreak as “shattering beyond words.”

“Nathan was an extraordinarily gifted young man,” the statement read. “A music producer, artist, engineer, and New York University graduate, he possessed an innate talent and an extraordinary spirit. His warmth, generosity, and unwavering passion illuminated every room he entered, leaving an indelible mark on all who knew him. His absence is an irreplaceable void in our lives.”

The 27-year-old, professionally known as DJ Young Slade, had been reported missing earlier this week in Milton, Georgia. Authorities described his departure from home as occurring under “unusual circumstances” and expressed concern that he may have been disoriented and in need of assistance.

Following an exhaustive search, which involved local law enforcement and the Cherokee County Fire Department, divers recovered a body from a pond near his residence on Friday.

The Milton Police Department confirmed that the individual is believed to be Nathan Smith, pending official verification by the Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office. While foul play is not suspected, the investigation remains active.

Lil Jon expressed his gratitude for the outpouring of public support: “We are deeply thankful for the prayers and assistance offered in our desperate search. Nathan’s brilliance, compassion, and zest for life touched so many, and the love shown by the community has been a small solace in these unbearable days.”

Born Jonathan Smith, Lil Jon is a seminal figure in the crunk subgenre of hip-hop, celebrated for hits including Get Low, Turn Down for What, and Shots. The family also mourns alongside Lil Jon’s daughter, Nahara, born in 2024, as they navigate the unbearable weight of grief.

Milton, a serene suburb roughly 30 miles north of Atlanta, remains in mourning, as a community reflects on the untimely loss of a prodigious young talent whose potential and promise were tragically curtailed.
