Google rebrands NotebookLM under Gemini AI family

Google has officially renamed its artificial intelligence-powered research and note-taking application NotebookLM as “Gemini Notebook,” as the company moves to bring the tool closer under its Gemini AI ecosystem.

The company announced the rebranding on July 16, confirming that the application will continue to function as a standalone platform while gaining enhanced integration with Google’s wider services, including the Gemini app and Google Search.

Google said the updated platform will continue helping users analyse, summarise and organise their own documents, research materials and other sources, while offering improved access across its AI ecosystem.

The application was initially introduced as Project Tailwind during Google I/O 2023 before being launched globally as NotebookLM.

The AI-powered tool was designed to help users work with their own information by generating summaries, answering questions and providing insights from uploaded sources.

Google said the platform has gained significant adoption, with more than 30 million users and over 600,000 organisations currently using the service.

Despite the new branding, Google confirmed that Gemini Notebook will remain a specialised research assistant rather than becoming a general-purpose chatbot.

As part of the update, Google is expanding Gemini Notebook’s integration with its artificial intelligence services.

Users can already create and access notebooks through the Gemini app, with synchronisation between the standalone Gemini Notebook experience and Google’s AI platform.

The company also plans to introduce notebook access within AI Mode in Google Search, allowing users to interact with their research materials more easily while searching for information.

Alongside the rebrand, Google has introduced a secure cloud-based computing feature that allows users to write and execute code directly within their notebooks.

The new capability is designed to support advanced data analysis by enabling users to process information from their uploaded sources more effectively.

The feature is currently available to Google AI Ultra subscribers and eligible Workspace business users, while access for Pro users on the web will be expanded in the coming weeks.

Google has continued developing NotebookLM beyond traditional note-taking functions by adding tools that transform user content into different formats, including audio summaries, video summaries and AI-generated learning materials.

The company said the latest coding update will allow users to conduct more detailed analysis and create more advanced research outputs.

The rebranding reflects Google’s broader strategy of consolidating its artificial intelligence products under the Gemini name while maintaining specialised tools for research, learning and productivity.

Gemini Notebook will be available through the existing NotebookLM platform, with the transition rolling out automatically for users.

Google has not provided a confirmed timeline for bringing notebooks to AI Mode in Search but said the feature will be introduced as part of future updates.
