Allie Colleen Brooks, the 30-year-old daughter of Garth Brooks, is facing online criticism after her tribute to Dolly Parton shifted focus toward her own fear of losing her famous father.
Posting to Instagram on August 25, the day Parton died, Allie wrote: “My greatest fear in life is the day my Dad loses his life and I have to see the world mourn a man they never knew the way I knew him. To the personal family and friends of Mrs. Dolly you have all my love and condolences today and forever going forward. What a huge, beautiful, special life to have loved and to grieve. Thank you for sharing her with us all.”
In her caption, she added further reflection on grief itself.
“What a beautiful privilege it is to mourn.. to grieve is to know you loved deeply and fully. To the woman we all love, and all those who grieve for her— I love you all. Please respect the family and her personal friends.”
The post drew a mixed reaction.
Some critics felt the message centered too much on Allie’s own anticipatory grief rather than Parton herself, with one commenter writing, “Allie, just a note. Next time, let someone read your work before you publish it. I know what you meant, however now was not the time to say it,” and another calling the framing “ridiculous.”
When one commenter questioned whether she was implying only Parton’s inner circle had the right to grieve her, Allie pushed back, clarifying she wasn’t speaking for anyone else’s experience.
“I would never act like I understand how much you grieve anyone, that’s all I am saying. I would never act like I understand how you feel the day you lose your person, so I would expect the same respect that you don’t know how I feel the day I lose mine.”
She received support from Mackenzie Lynn Adkins, daughter of singer Trace Adkins, who wrote that the fear Allie described felt “very very scary and real for my sisters and I,” to which Allie replied, “I know you understand babe, should the day come, we’ll get through it.”
Allie is the youngest of Brooks’s three daughters with ex-wife Sandy Mahl, alongside sisters Taylor and August.
She’s built her own career as a country singer-songwriter, releasing her debut album, Stones, in April 2021.
Parton died August 25 at age 80 following a brief battle with cancer.
