    Funk legend Carl Carlton passes away at 73

    Legendary funk and R&B singer Carl Carlton, renowned for his hit “She’s a Bad Mama Jama,” has passed away at the age of 73.

    His son, Carlton Hudgens II, confirmed the news on social media, sharing heartfelt tributes to his father.

    “RIP Dad, Legend Carl Carlton, singer of ‘She’s a Bad Mama Jama.’ Long, hard fight in life and you will be missed,” wrote Hudgens. In another post, he added, “R.I.P Dad, You can finally rest now. Always love you.”

    Born Carlton Hudgens in Detroit, Carlton began his career in the 1960s as Little Carl Carlton. In 1971, he adopted the name Carl Carlton, achieving his first chart success with “I Can Feel It,” which entered the Billboard Soul Singles chart.

    His 1974 cover of “Everlasting Love” reached the top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 and continues to be streamed widely, with over 25 million plays on Spotify.

    Carlton’s most iconic work, “She’s a Bad Mama Jama,” earned a Grammy nomination and has over 100 million Spotify streams. The song has been sampled extensively and featured in films like Miss Congeniality 2 and Fat Albert, as well as the TV series Friends.

    He had been battling health challenges following a stroke six years ago, according to Soultracks.com.

    Paying tribute, funk ensemble Confunkshun wrote: “With heavy hearts, we mourn the passing of the legendary Carl Carlton. His voice, talent, and contributions to soul and R&B music will forever be part of our lives and the soundtrack of countless memories. Our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and fans worldwide. Rest in power, Carl. Your legacy lives on.”

    Carl Carlton’s music continues to inspire, ensuring his influence in soul and R&B will endure for generations to come.
