Memphis Grizzlies forward Brandon Clarke has tragically passed away at the age of 29 the NBA confirmed on Tuesday sending shockwaves across the basketball world. The cause of death has not yet been officially disclosed.

The Memphis Grizzlies expressed deep sorrow over the loss describing Clarke as an exceptional teammate and a valued member of the organisation whose influence extended well beyond the basketball court.

“We are heartbroken by the tragic loss of Brandon Clarke,” the franchise said in a statement, adding that his legacy within the team and the wider Memphis community would be long remembered.

Born in Vancouver, Canada, Clarke held dual citizenship in Canada and the United States. He moved to Phoenix at an early age and went on to build an impressive basketball journey through San Jose State University and Gonzaga University before entering the NBA Draft.

He was selected 21st overall in the 2019 NBA Draft by the Oklahoma City Thunder and was immediately traded to the Memphis Grizzlies, where he spent his entire professional career.

Clarke made an immediate impact in the league, earning NBA All-Rookie First Team honours in 2020 after a standout debut season. Known for his athleticism, defensive intensity, and high-energy playing style, he averaged 10.2 points and 5.5 rebounds across his NBA career.

Over seven seasons with Memphis, Clarke featured in 309 games and became a reliable and dynamic presence on the roster.

However his recent years were heavily affected by injuries, including knee, calf, and Achilles setbacks. A torn Achilles tendon in 2023 significantly limited his playing time, restricting him to just a few appearances in recent seasons.

Despite these challenges, Clarke remained a respected and admired figure within the team and the wider NBA community. Commissioner Adam Silver paid tribute, highlighting his passion for the game, competitive spirit, and strong leadership qualities.

His agency, Priority Sports, also expressed profound grief, describing him as a “gentle soul” who was deeply cherished by teammates, friends, and everyone he encountered.

Reports had previously mentioned Clarke’s arrest in Arkansas on charges including speeding and possession of a controlled substance; however, no official confirmation has linked the incident to his death.

Clarke’s untimely passing has left the basketball world in mourning, with tributes pouring in across the NBA, celebrating both his professional achievements and his character off the court.
