A plant-based diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and healthy fats is recommended to help prevent stroke by managing key risk factors like high blood pressure and cholesterol. Diets like the Mediterranean and DASH eating patterns have strong evidence supporting their benefits for cardiovascular health.

    1. Fruits and Vegetables

Leafy Greens: Spinach and kale are rich in potassium and magnesium, which help regulate blood pressure.

Berries: Blueberries and strawberries contain antioxidants that reduce inflammation and improve blood vessel health.

Citrus Fruits: Oranges and grapefruits provide Vitamin C and flavonoids linked to lower stroke risk.

Tomatoes: These are high in lycopene, an antioxidant that may help prevent blood clots.

    2. Healthy Proteins and Fats

Fatty Fish: Salmon, mackerel, and sardines are high in omega-3 fatty acids, which reduce inflammation and prevent clot formation.

Legumes: Beans, lentils, and chickpeas provide soluble fiber and potassium to lower cholesterol and blood pressure.

Nuts and Seeds: Walnuts, flaxseeds, and chia seeds contain healthy fats and fiber. One major study found that a Mediterranean diet supplemented with nuts reduced stroke risk by nearly 50%.

Olive Oil: As a primary fat source, extra-virgin olive oil is a cornerstone of the Mediterranean Diet, which is widely considered the best for stroke prevention.

    3. Whole Grains

Oatmeal and Quinoa: These fiber-rich grains help maintain stable blood sugar and healthy cholesterol levels.

    4. Specific Beneficial Beverages

Coffee and Tea: Moderate consumption of coffee (3–5 cups daily) or tea (green or black) is linked to lower cardiovascular risk due to high antioxidant content.

    Foods to Limit

To effectively lower your risk, the CDC recommends limiting:

Sodium (Salt): High salt intake is the leading dietary cause of high blood pressure.

Red and Processed Meats: Often high in saturated fats and sodium, which can lead to clogged arteries.

Added Sugars: Found in sodas and sweets, these contribute to obesity and diabetes, both major stroke risk factors.
