Five health warning signs from your body that you should not ignore

Our body is one of our strongest defenses against illness, but when it falls ill, it often gives subtle signals. These signs can be quiet, easy to overlook, or easy to blame on stress.

However, small changes can sometimes indicate a more serious underlying problem. Pharmacists often act as the first point of contact when something feels “off,” helping detect issues early and advising whether further tests are needed.

    High Blood Pressure

High blood pressure is often called a “silent killer” because it rarely shows obvious symptoms. In the UK, NHS figures suggest that 4.2 million people in England may have undiagnosed high blood pressure. If untreated, it can increase the risk of heart disease, stroke, kidney problems, and vascular dementia. Superintendent pharmacist Amir Bhogal explains that elevated readings can occur even when you feel perfectly fine. Regular monitoring at a pharmacy or GP is essential, especially if you have a family history of heart disease, stroke, or high blood pressure.

    Persistent Fatigue

Feeling tired after a busy week is normal, but waking up exhausted after a full night’s sleep is not. Persistent fatigue that affects daily life may signal conditions such as diabetes, thyroid disorders, anemia, or iron deficiencies. Bhogal emphasizes that ongoing tiredness should never be ignored, as it can be an early warning that the body needs attention.

    Blood Sugar Fluctuations

Frequent episodes of shakiness, sweating, or a racing heart could indicate that your body isn’t regulating blood sugar properly. These symptoms may point to early stages of diabetes and can also cause lightheadedness, hunger, or difficulty concentrating. Diabetes often develops gradually, so noticing these changes early can help in seeking timely medical advice.

    Frequent Headaches

Headaches are common and usually linked to stress, dehydration, or muscle tension. However, if they become more frequent, severe, or change in intensity, they should not be ignored, as they may signal underlying health issues that require professional evaluation.

    Digestive Changes

Persistent changes in digestion can indicate problems with organs such as the liver, pancreas, or gallbladder. This may include going to the toilet more or less often than usual, ongoing diarrhea or constipation, bloating, stomach pain, or changes in stool color and consistency. Bhogal advises paying attention to these signs, especially if they persist without a clear cause.

Recognizing these subtle signals and acting early can help prevent more serious health problems. Regular check-ups, monitoring, and listening to your body are key to staying healthy.
