ISLAMABAD: The National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) has initiated legal action against five individuals allegedly involved in an online hate campaign targeting Pakistan’s state institutions during the recent spike in tensions between Pakistan and India, a spokesperson confirmed on Thursday.
According to the NCCIA spokesperson, the suspects have been named in the first information reports (FIRs) registered under cybercrime laws. The individuals are accused of spreading “false and provocative content” on social media during the recent cross-border strain.
The spokesperson said the suspects launched a coordinated disinformation campaign against the state, particularly the armed forces and senior national officials.
“The nominated individuals have been actively involved in promoting misleading propaganda against Pakistan’s state institutions,” said the agency representative.
The FIR said that the suspects consistently shared fabricated and misleading materials, which the NCCIA states incited hatred against the military and other key institutions.
“This content contributed to creating unrest, anxiety, and distrust among the public towards the state,” the FIR noted.
Furthermore, the shared materials were designed to incite fear and confusion among citizens, with prosecutors stating that the campaign aimed at undermining the public’s confidence in the state.
The NCCIA spokesperson said the investigation agency had initiated legal proceedings against the suspects after lodging the FIRs.
