The long-awaited return of Street Fighter to cinemas has officially begun, with Paramount Pictures and Legendary releasing the first trailer for the live-action reboot on April 16, 2026.

Unveiled during CinemaCon 2026, the trailer has generated strong reactions across both gaming and film communities, promising a high-octane adaptation filled with martial arts action and iconic characters.

Set in 1993, the film is directed by Kitao Sakurai and aims to recreate the vibrant arcade-era atmosphere that defined the franchise’s global success, particularly during the peak of Street Fighter II.

The story follows Ryu (Andrew Koji) and Ken Masters (Noah Centineo), estranged fighters who are pulled back into conflict by Chun-Li (Callina Liang) to compete in the World Warrior Tournament, a global fighting event where only the strongest survive.

Beyond the tournament, the narrative reportedly explores a deeper conspiracy linked to the Shadaloo organization, led by M. Bison (David Dastmalchian). As the competition unfolds, the fighters are forced to confront personal struggles, rivalries, and hidden truths that shape their destinies.

The ensemble cast features a wide range of international talent, including Jason Momoa as Blanka, Roman Reigns as Akuma, 50 Cent as Balrog, Cody Rhodes as Guile, Mel Jarnson as Cammy, Vidyut Jammwal as Dhalsim, Orville Peck as Vega, and Olivier Richters as Zangief, among others. The diverse casting highlights the franchise’s global identity and tournament-based structure.

The trailer showcases intense fight sequences and faithful recreations of iconic moves such as Ryu’s Hadouken and Chun-Li’s Spinning Bird Kick, blending practical stunt work with modern visual effects. Early scenes emphasize a nostalgic 1990s setting, reinforcing the film’s commitment to its arcade roots.

Costume design and character styling also stay true to the original game, with classic elements like Ken’s red gi and Guile’s signature look making notable appearances.

The film’s soundtrack adds another layer of nostalgia and experimentation, featuring a reworked version of Tupac Shakur’s “Ambitionz Az a Ridah,” along with stylized musical transitions that reflect the personalities of key characters.

Production on the film has undergone several changes over time, including shifts in directors and writers, before finalizing its current creative direction under Sakurai, with contributions from T.J. Fixman and Gary Dauberman. The production team has stated its intention to overcome the long-standing challenges faced by video game adaptations in cinema.

With more than 55 million copies sold worldwide, the Street Fighter franchise remains one of gaming’s most influential series, raising expectations for a successful big-screen revival.

The film is scheduled for release on October 16, 2026, and is already being positioned as one of the most anticipated video game adaptations in recent years.
