Justin Greaves starred with a five-wicket haul as West Indies dismissed Pakistan for 282 on the third day of the first Test at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy on Monday, taking a 29-run first-innings lead.
The visitors, who resumed their first innings after lunch from 267/8 in response to West Indies’ 311 all out, could add 15 more to their total and were thus booked for 282 in 80.1 overs.
Pakistan got off to an undesired start to the second session of the ongoing third day as Greaves got rid of Mohammad Abbas (zero) to register his maiden five-wicket haul in the format.
Khurram Shahzad offered some resistance down the order with a gritty 19 off 36 deliveries until falling victim to Kemar Roach.
Greaves spearheaded West Indies’ bowling charge with sensational bowling figures of 5/27 in his 11 overs, followed by Roach and Shamar Joseph with two each, while Jayden Seales chipped in with one scalp.
Earlier in the day, Pakistan made a formidable start to the day as they resumed their first innings from 199/3, with their overnight pair of Shan Masood and Salman Ali Agha frustrating the home side’s bowlers.
The duo put together a crucial 47-run partnership for the fourth wicket, which saw Masood bring up his seventh Test century and first since being replaced as Pakistan Test captain by star batter Babar Azam.
Shamar Joseph eventually gave West Indies the much-needed breakthrough in the 15th over of the day as he bamboozled Agha with a late-swinger, which clipped the top of his off stump. The all-rounder made a cautious 20 off 60 deliveries, hitting three boundaries.
Greaves inflicted a massive blow to Pakistan’s response in the next over as he bowled centurion Masood, who walked back after top-scoring with 109 off 184 deliveries, studded with 12 fours.
32-year-old fast-bowling all-rounder struck once apiece in his next three overs, dismissing returning Aamir Jamal (three), debutant Ali Usman (zero) and Rizwan (12) and reduced Pakistan to 259/8.
