Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry inaugurated Pakistan’s first Fishing Technology Museum and also introduced the Mahi Dost digital traceability application. These initiatives aim to improve fisheries management and boost the competitiveness of Pakistan’s seafood exports.

The museum, located in Karachi, showcases the development of fishing methods from traditional practices to modern technologies. It serves as a national hub for research, learning, and policy guidance, while also preserving the cultural heritage of coastal communities as the sector modernizes.

Speaking to fishermen, academics, and business representatives, the minister explained that the museum is designed to support policy decisions by combining local knowledge with modern tools. He emphasized that technologies such as AI-enabled sonar systems and environmentally friendly nets could help prevent overfishing and manage climate-related risks.

He also highlighted that Pakistan’s exclusive economic zone holds great potential but continues to suffer losses due to illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing. The museum’s research and archives could help bring evidence-based reforms and train future marine scientists and fisheries managers.

The Mahi Dost app introduces a digital system to track fish from catch to consumer using blockchain and GPS. Fishermen can record catch data via QR codes, ensuring compliance with international regulations like EU Catch Certification, the US Marine Mammal Protection Act, and Indian Ocean Tuna Commission standards.

The app also verifies dolphin-safe fishing practices and improves transparency in seafood supply chains, supporting Pakistan’s $500 million seafood export industry. Pilot projects have already reduced approval times for European markets and allowed small-scale fishermen to reach higher-value buyers.

Additionally, the minister announced the soft launch of a ferry service terminal on January 8, the first time a private company has been licensed to operate a ferry in Pakistan. He mentioned that he has contacted the ambassadors of Iran, Iraq, and Yemen to encourage ferry operators in their countries to coordinate with Pakistan’s ministry.
