FIFA has banned spectators from bringing reusable water bottles into stadiums during the 2026 FIFA World Cup following a last-minute change to the tournament’s stadium code of conduct.
According to international media reports, FIFA had initially permitted fans to carry transparent and empty reusable plastic bottles into venues. However, under revised regulations that came into effect on Tuesday, such containers are now prohibited.
FIFA said the decision was made to enhance safety, noting that bottles, cups, jars and cans could pose a risk of injury to players, spectators and officials if thrown onto the field or into the stands.
“The safety of players, referees, volunteers, staff and fans remains our top priority,” FIFA said, adding that some host stadiums had already enforced restrictions on outside bottles and that the policy would now be applied consistently across the tournament.
The move has sparked concern among fans about access to drinking water during matches, particularly as temperatures at some host venues are expected to range between 26 and 28 degrees Celsius.
In response, FIFA said it would provide hydration support around stadiums, including misting stations, water refill points, cooling tents and other measures designed to help spectators cope with warm weather conditions.
